A friend of my girlfriend’s from Berlin was recently introduced to Facebook during a visit to us here in Belgrade. Last night I asked how she was getting on with her sojourn into Social Networking and was told that apparently “Facebook is not that popular in Germany”.
I had noticed the odd dominance of certain services in some countries - Livejournal in Russia, Orkut and Fotki in Brazil etc - but yesterday I came across a definitive analysis of Social network popularity around the world and the results are quite revealing, especially if you are using Social media for marketing and business campaigns.
Did you know LinkedIn is tops in Denmark, or that Bebo is tops in Ireland or that nothing seems to be too popular in Germany?
From Pingdom:
With the help of Google data, we have looked at 12 of the top social networks to answer a simple, but highly interesting question:
Where are they the most popular?
The social networks we included in this survey were MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, Friendster, LinkedIn, Orkut, Last.fm, LiveJournal, Xanga, Bebo, Imeem and Twitter.

This has led me to Google Insights for Search - where you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, and time frames- and I will definitely be taking a closer look.
